Wheelchair Cars That The Wheelchair User Can Drive

When it comes to choosing wheelchair cars, there are two main choices that you have. Either you go for a mobility vehicle that
can carry you while you are seated in your wheelchair as a passenger, or a mobility vehicle that you can drive yourself while
still seated in your wheelchair.

The wheelchair cars that are converted so that you can drive whilst seated in your wheelchair are quite a lot more expensive
than the versions that you remain a passenger. This is because the vehicle needs to be designed around you and the wheelchair
and as such requires a great deal more conversion than the other type.

Most of the wheelchair cars that are converted for you to drive offer you access by the press of a button on a remote control.
This will according to the specific vehicle lower the suspension and unfold a ramp or offer a wheelchair lift to get you in the
wheelchair car.

By the fact that you will need a clear passage to get to the driving compartment of the mobility vehicle, there will be fewer
options for additional passenger seating in the vehicle.

A system will secure your wheelchair into position once you are in the driving compartment. Additionally you will most likely
need a variety of adapted controls that facilitate the control of the vehicle. This will be at least a set of hand controls. When
looking at wheelchair cars with a view to buy, make sure you know whether the hand controls are included in the price as in
many cases they come as extras.

If you are buying a used wheelchair car, then the hand controls will, in most cases, already be installed. If they are not, or
they are not appropriately positioned for your personal needs, you can request the mobility vehicle dealer to reposition them.
He/She may ask for an additional fee for this depending on how much work is involved.

Some wheelchair cars are converted in such a way as to enable the driving compartment to be switched back to a more
standard setting so that your carer or a friend can drive instead of you. Such mobility vehicle conversions are more detailed
and sophisticated and will naturally raise the final price of the vehicle.

Wheelchair cars as a whole are very specialised vehicles and as such there is a great amount of personal tailoring that is
factored into the settings and even some of type construction of the vehicle. You need to get a mobility vehicle that is ideally
suited to your needs, so take the time to familiarise your self with what is on offer as well as what can be done with a wheelchair
car.

You will need to be available to have at least one and sometimes two ‘fittings’ so that the mobility vehicle engineers and
fitters can customize the vehicle accordingly. Although the task of checking out the variety of wheelchair cars that are available
may seem rather a daunting prospect, the time is well spent as by the time you take delivery of you custom converted mobility
vehicle, it will be perfectly tailored to your requirements. Now it is time to enjoy.
